Julie Gibbins MCICM – Director/Consultant

I have been working in credit control for 30 years but have enjoyed a varied career taking 10 years out to manage a pub, work for P&O Ferries and bring up my daughter.

I have worked in various trades including building, motor, technology, construction, marine engineering and media, namely for a nationally-owned local newspaper; The Daily Echo.

For the last 12 years I have worked for Newsquest as credit controller becoming Dorset Supervisor, Hampshire Supervisor, Dorset & Sussex Supervisor and finally becoming the Credit Manager for the entire southern region.

Whilst at Newsquest I was involved with a lot of major changes, including a major project to move accounts from Andover, Basingstoke, Dorset, Sussex into the Southampton centre. I put into place procedures making sure everyone knew what they were doing. Rigorously monitoring all procedures has meant I’ve consistently adapted and streamlined systems as the industry has changed. This has lead to a reduction in debtor days and increased productivity.

If a customer has an outstanding debt they are less likely to come to you to increase this, they will go somewhere else as they would rather you forget the outstanding amount. Nobody likes having to pay someone else but if they have purchased goods or service they know the money is due but will try to stretch this out as long as possible.

I would not attempt to rewire a house as that is not my trade, credit control is my trade and I’m excellent at it. I have been working in Finance for 30 years. 22 years with the bank in business loans and 9 as credit controller for a nationally-owned local newspaper; The Daily Echo whilst bringing up my daughter.

For the last 9 years I have worked for Newsquest as a credit controller and have worked within different sectors ie Advertising Agencies, Trade Standard, Estate Agencies, News Agents and Home Delivery accounts. I worked my way up to Credit Control Supervisor.

Whilst at Newsquest I was involved with helping Julie with many of the changes we rolled out. Rigorously monitoring all procedures has meant I have consistently adapted and helped streamline systems as the industry has changed. This has led to a reduction in debtor days and increased productivity.

My passion is getting involved and having personal contact speaking to clients and I take pleasure and pride in obtaining payments and meeting targets to reduce debtor days, increasing cash flow within the Company. Overall I like to make everybody’s life easier and less stressful!

Each customer is different and it’s that difference that makes the job enjoyable for me. I never know what challenge is on the end of the phone call and I take pride in keeping my ledgers tidy and debts to a minimum.
